Search and rescue operation is under way after the destruction of an entire residential block belonging to the al-Nuwairi family in the Nuseirat refugee camp in the central Gaza Strip.

A surviving resident told Al Jazeera that there were “children and girls” in the house.

“There is no safety zone, they told us here is the safety of Ajina here,” the survivor said.

A member of the civil defence told Al Jazeera that “among those targeted is a month-old baby girl and efforts to search for her are still ongoing”.

The deaths of an infant girl and a young woman in Gaza have increased the number of known starvation deaths to 25.

The health ministry said a two-month-old died of malnutrition and dehydration at the Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza.

Starvation and dehydration also killed the young woman at al-Shifa Hospital, where three more young people died of the same cause on Friday.

“The increase in deaths from malnutrition and dehydration is extremely worrying and confirms that famine in northern Gaza has reached deadly levels,” the ministry said.

The death toll only reflects cases brought to hospitals, and many more are believed to have died of starvation.

As Israel continues to block aid deliveries, an estimated 300,000 people in besieged northern Gaza face famine.

The Israeli military confirmed Major Amishar Ben David has been killed during fighting in southern Gaza.

It identified the 43-year-old as the head of the Commando Brigade’s forward command team. He was from the illegal settlement of Eli in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

Ben David is the 248th soldier killed since Israel’s ground invasion of the besieged enclave was launched in October.

According to Israeli government 1,139 Israelis were killed by Hamas on 7 October in southern Israel and 134 Israelis and foreign nationals are still detained by Hamas in Gaza.
